Background of the Study:
Traditional rulers continue to play an influential role in local governance and community development in many Nigerian communities, including Akoko South-West Local Government Area. Their longstanding cultural authority, combined with modern governance structures, positions them as vital mediators in community affairs (Ogunyemi, 2023). Traditional leadership has been instrumental in conflict resolution, preservation of cultural heritage, and mobilization of community resources for development projects (Akinola, 2024). The integration of traditional governance with formal administrative practices has enhanced community cohesion and contributed to socio-economic development (Idris, 2023). Despite challenges such as diminishing influence due to modernization and political interference, traditional rulers continue to impact decision-making processes, social norms, and communal solidarity (Babatunde, 2024). This study explores the dynamic interplay between traditional authority and modern governance in driving community development and local administrative efficiency (Ayodele, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
In Akoko South-West, traditional rulers face challenges in effectively bridging cultural leadership and formal governance. Issues such as political encroachment and evolving societal expectations undermine their authority and limit their ability to fully contribute to community development (Kolawole, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the role of traditional rulers in local governance.
To evaluate their contribution to community development.
To identify challenges affecting traditional leadership.
Research Questions:
How do traditional rulers contribute to local governance?
What role do they play in community development?
What challenges impede their effectiveness?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional rulers positively influence local governance.
Their involvement enhances community development outcomes.
Political interference negatively impacts traditional authority.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it highlights the enduring influence of traditional rulers in community development, providing insights for integrating traditional leadership with modern governance for sustainable local development (Adebisi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Rulers: Custodians of cultural heritage and community leadership.
Local Governance: The administration of local affairs by community-based authorities.
